Here you will find a selection of postal items from the 19th century sent to and from abroad until the Netherlands became a member of the General Postal Union on 1 July 1875. Before that date, conventions with the various countries stipulated the exchange of the mail and determined the postal rates. Exchange took place between Border Post Offices. The General Postal Union (GPU), from 1878 Universal Postal Union (Union Postale Universelle, UPU) arranged standard rates for mail between the member states.
